Saxy!

As the title suggests, this piece is derived from recordings of the Saxophone. Although this source material included conventional sounds from the instrument, I was also interested in capturing the image of the human agent that allows the instrument to come to life.

The work falls into 3 sections, which explore different extremes of the instrument. At first wild and energetic, the rich and dynamic material gradually evolves to reveal a more contemplative sound world that perhaps references its human origins.

Saxy! was awarded 3rd Prize at the Diffusion Composition Competition, Limerick, Ireland 2010.
